The Rules To Accessorizing

Accessories can make a significant difference to the overall look of an outfit. It is important that you follow a few simple rules in order to avoid a fashion faux pas. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to accessorizing your outfit.

DOS
  • Enhance your outfit: pick pieces that complement your outfit, not take away or distract from it.
  • Keep it current: ensure that your accessories follow the currents trends.
  • Use a variety of different pieces: don’t be known for always wearing that one necklace. Change it up every once in a while.
  • Purchase classic staple pieces: a black leather tote purse will last you a life time whereas an animal print bag may only be in style for one season.

DON’TS
  • Mix prints: a striped tank paired with a plaid scarf just does not work. Keep it simple.
  • Don’t do it all at once: we all have a few favourite pieces but you don’t have to wear them all at once. Wear the earrings to dinner but save the hat for the beach.
  • Don’t over accessorize: quality over quantity.

The Little Black Dress

We all have one hanging in the back of our closets waiting for a night on the town. The little black dress is a staple in any women’s wardrobe. There are infinite ways to accessorize a LBD. In this post I will teach you how to accessorize your LBD for any time of day.

DAY TIME
When paired with some ballet flats, a light knit cardigan and a tote bag, your LBD is ready for lunch with your girlfriends or just running errands.

NIGHT TIME
Dress it up with a pair of stilettos and a chunky necklace for a fancy dinner or going out to the night club.

WEEKEND

Some colourful wedges paired with a few cute bangles will make your LBD appropriate for a backyard barbeque with friends.

What’s in your bag?

It’s the five pounds no women can leave the house without. The average Canadian women’s handbag weights the equivalent of five bags of sugar. Not only does it carry all of our essentials, but a handbag can make or break an outfit. Here is a look at four different styles of bags and their purpose.

THE TOTE
This open top bag is ideal for shopping, travel or the beach. They come in a variety of sizes and they can hold just about anything. Totes are generally soft sided bags with a longer shoulder strap for carrying. A tote is the perfect match for any casual outfit.

THE SATCHEL
A satchel is a small bag with a long cross body strap. Satchels are the perfect choice for concerts, day trips or night clubs. They can also be office appropriate when paired with the right outfit. Satchels are popular among teens as the cross body strap reduces the chance of losing your belongings!

THE CLUTCH/WRISTLET
These two styles are some of the smallest types of bags. They are very convenient and practical. Generally these bags are used for fancier occasions such as dinner or parties. They are the perfect size for your phone, some cash and your favourite lip stick.

THE KELLY STYLE BAG

The Kelly Style was originally created by Hermes for the famous movie star Grace Kelly. This bag is a classic structured style, it is a simple design and looks great paired with a suit and like the satchel; it is a great option for the office.

Book Review
Style- Lauren Conrad

I must admit, I love Lauren Conrad so my review on her newest book, Style by Lauren Conrad, may be a little biased. I have been a fan of Lauren since her friends called her LC and she was casted for the MTV reality show Laguna Beach. I have watched her style evolve throughout all five seasons of The Hills, and it continues to improve with her very own fashion line.

I was ecstatic when she released a book all about her own personal style, including tips and tricks from hair and makeup to packing the essentials for vacation.  I was impressed from the very beginning, by the immaculately organized chapters and beautiful images relating to almost everything fashion related.

Catching my attention more specifically was the chapter on how to accessorize your outfit. Once again, Lauren uses the little black dress as an example of how you can accessorize that staple item in your closet for any occasion. She explains the simple changes you can make in order to completely alter the look of the ensemble. This chapter goes in depth on what style shoes should go with what fit of jeans; what jewelry to wear with a v-neck as opposed to a scoop neck and so on. This chapter also teaches you to layer and dress practically while also looking cute of course. These tips come in very handy on vacation for example; you can bring one dress and wear it three different nights without anyone noticing it is the same dress.

Aside from accessorizing, Laurens book offers great advice on everything from cleaning out your closet to shopping for only the necessities, rather than making impulse purchases. Another great chapter is titled “Editing your closet”, Lauren gives pointers on how to clear out your closet, and let go of all those things you never really wear. You would have been mortified if you saw my overflowing closet before reading this book. Lauren’s method of tackling this problem was to try every single thing on and either keep it, throw it away or give it to charity. Once I got started, I found it much easier than expected.

While reading this book, I was excited to turn every page to see what was coming next. It is filled with great tips and advice that any girl would find useful. It is also a great reference book if you’re looking to renovate your wardrobe or you need a little bit of guidance getting dressed in the morning. I look forward to reading more of Lauren’s books in the future!
